It Being Sunday - a poem by Anne Selden Annab

"La Liberalité". Texte latin: "Dives in omnes". (Il est riche pour tous). Corne d'abundance. Pierre Le Moyne (1602-1671): De l'art de regner / Le Moyne. Publisher: À Paris : chez Sebastien Cramoisy et Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, imprimeurs du Roy.

   It Being Sunday

It being Sunday

in a land with many churches

I pray that prayers for peace

rise up, rise up to sway

people away from war.

Away from bombing children,

pulverizing families,

and homes ... and jobs.

Away from generating enemies.

Away from creating poverty, starvation, suffering...

Might does not make right

nor does armed resistance.

Scorn violence!

We live in an age of computers- the internet

an endless feed of personal truths at our fingertips

with the power of fair and just laws

able to shape a better way forward

for all of humankind.

Religious Fact ...

            Religious Fact

Jewish- Christian- Muslim ALL
of the book ALL Abraham's
heirs... ALL of faith
somewhere on our
family tree.

A branch with branches
and twigs and seasons
bringing forth new leaves.

One branch on one tree
in a large orchard of life.

Some where some one
long long ago choose
to believe, to have faith
and to name that faith.

That human being
told true stories to
others. And others
helped spread the word.

Minds and hearts opened
communities grew
and yet
so did divisiveness as we are all
                            only human,

with many loving children
teaching each in turn
phrases to say
and habits to have
shaping human history.

Jewish- Christian- Muslim ALL
of an elaborate world where one by one,
each in our own exclusive way,
we are empowered to decide
who and what to notice
& who and what
to forget.

“My Christian grandmother and my Muslim grandmother in Palestine” - Shared by a Palestinian man on Facebook

The Holy Land

You have bullets, bully brigades,
biblical words & word smiths
all fundraising for more...
More injustice. More suffering.
More homes and gardens usurped,
more children tormented and
families destroyed in what was
(what always will be)
historic Palestine.

We have nothing much more
than personal stories,
beloved memories,
and old photographs
preserved online for all to see.

We are people, human beings.
Our ancestry reaches back
totally entwined with every
rock and stone, every tree,
every water well, every little flower,
no matter where we are now.

Our recipes are of the land
and trade routes, plus trial
and error.  We helped perfect bread
baked in clay ovens, in our own way.

Our Zaatar is a scrumptious blend
of herbs & our olive oil is heavenly gold.

We keep keys.

Our embroideries are
by hand, with symbols
imagined and taught
mother to daughter for eons,
for longer than thread can last.

Our hope is that one day
justice and peace will prevail
for all good people willing to
actively empower fair and just laws
with full and equal rights, respect,
dignity... and security for all.

A Christmas poem... Star Street Bethlehem Palestine 2014

          Star Street Bethlehem Palestine 2014

Half a world away
light flickers...

Stars strung house
to house, home to home
a narrow alley
in an ancient place
and a modern car
gliding... guiding
good thoughts...

Strand after strand
string after string
row by row over head
line by line
electric stars shine
illuminating
a golden glow
a golden path
a golden trance
as we go...

Wordless wonder
here and there
sharing a ride,
a marveling minute
(& twenty three seconds)
of real life and light
in Bethlehem
today... tonight...

think what you want
and I will too

as half a world away
Christmas returns renewed
in open hearts and curious,
creative minds
connecting.

Ibrahim's Estate .... a poem by Anne Selden Annab

The Promised Land: In Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  & Peace Day

       Ibrahim's Estate

Recognizing rights
basic human rights
the People of the Book-
the Christians and Muslims and Jews
and the People of Outside the Box
looked... They
looked to homelands
looked to citizenship
looked to fair and just laws
to compassion
and empathy
and the Golden Rule...

looked for ways
to make peace
and diplomacy
a daily practice.

Some went astray.
Some waged war
instead of waging peace.

Some grew ugly thoughts
instead of gardens with flowers
to delight the soul and fruit to feed
the hungry.

Some grew selfish and paranoid.
Some grew angry and cruel
Some grew violent.

Bigots & bullies tried to own the story-
to tell it in ways to diminish
and alienate "others"...
to tell it in ways
to spark rage
and arguments...

But the People of the Book-
the Christians and Muslims and Jews
and the People of Outside the Box
taught their children to read
and to think...  to stop look and listen...
and to invest wisely
so that country by country
community by community
we all might be free
as one epic nation
free to flourish
enjoying
Ibrahim's Estate...

This then is the nation
the promised land-
the real estate
agents of Good
keep safe for all to inherit...

No border, no book, no line, no letter
no brick or stone can contain it. No passport
can define it. No one sect
can own it... it is ours
in the largest sense

It is ours for all
eternity.

Little Golden Bell...

Tiny 2,000-year-old golden bell found in Jerusalem: A tiny golden bell which was lost in Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago during the Second Temple period has been found among ruins near the Old City, Israel's Antiquities Authority has said

Little Golden Bell

Little golden bell
lost
for 2000 years-
a precious treasure
and token
of times gone by

What stories did you hear
when you were first created
bought and sold
and then later- through the ages
as you hid in Palestine?

What songs and hymns stirred
your heart to beat
underground

Did footsteps echo
in your ear
coming and going

Shall we argue now
as to your religion
and rightful heirs...

Fondly remembering the freedom
and the beauty found
in my own American childhood
(and the silly seriousness of children)
I like to think
you belonged to a young girl
A girl with joy in her heart
and a brilliant mind...
even brighter than your gold polished
A girl able to balance on a beam

A girl whose own story
we will never know
She is free to simply be
no ID card- no passport
no prison- no politics
no accusations
no religion
no names

Just life
being lived

little golden bell

perhaps she meant
to drop you.

Freedom to me is ... (a poem)

Freedom to me is
the ability to err
and apologize...

Freedom to me is the right
to change my mind-
change my hairstyle
change my clothes
change my mood
change my purse
the right to explore ideas
and formulate my own
and the right to change my mind
and maybe yours...

The Right To Respect
the Right To Return
& The Golden Rule...

Freedom to me is
the right to admire beauty
and invest in dignity

Freedom to me is
the awareness
of change
and changing awareness

Freedom to me is
finding hope
no matter what or where...

Freedom to me is to honor
my own heritage
and hearth

My family- and yours
our marriage
all marriage...

and the intriguing history
of humankind.

Christ was a Palestinian

And unto us
a new era is born

The Phoenix
rising from the flames
of "Israel"

In seeing the Israeli made myths
and violence now

as the information age explodes

We Know

We know that what was remembered then
was for power- not for truth

We know that Israel usurped land and rights- and even the story itself

Now and then

We know that Israeli crimes
are all the more wrong as they claim
to be for God

We know

Now and then

We know that the only known political fact
is simply that the prophet and savior
Christ
was a Palestinian...

And we know that he deployed
Parables to free the people
from tyranny
of every type

Parables
to compel humankind to be both human
and kind

Parables
not guns

A dialog
not guns

Life
not death

We know that Christ is resurrection...

and we know that Palestine was then- and will be again
somehow

We know

and this faith
shall light our way

no matter what

This faith
will transcend the hate mongering
and sorrow and suffering...

This faith
will heal
the many wounds

made by Israel

and the many mistakes
made by all people
trying to find peace
in a troubled world

This faith will rebuild Palestine
one day

This faith will free the people
one by one
to transcend the many tyrannies
of our time

For Christ really was- is and always will be
a Palestinian....

Rivers of paint...

Rivers of paint
run through my blood

Rivers of unequivocal color
up out of the mud

huts to palaces
every home

where ever tint can roam

every floor
every wall
every tile
every hall

every costume
every dance
every embroidery
every glance

huts to palaces
every home

every garden
every wood
every field
every could

huts to palaces
every home

where ever ever ever
an I might roam

...Universal Echo

Every time
you unlock any door
any where
any one
you are Al-Awda

Any time
you fit a key
into any ignition
of any vehicle

you are Al-Awda

Any time
you write a poem
(or a grocery list)
you are Al-Awda
as the ink shapes
in every language
spell out
what was
is and always will be
Al-Awda

When you read a book
When you fall in love
When you buy a ring
When you leave home
When you return
all Al-Awda

Every time
you flick a switch
turn on a light
Al-Awda

Every time
you close your eyes
and dream
Al-Awda

Every pillow you fluff
every penny you drop
every street you stroll
every garden
every step
even every stumble
All Al-Awda

And now knowing Al-Awda
know that all roads now
lead home
....to Palestine

Rima

Rima Najjar in a traditional Palestinian Embroidered Thobe

Rima

Rima- connected

by family and Palestine.

She travels the world online and on foot,

following the art and the history

of and for Palestine.

Rima's goodness

(her greatness)

has a reach far beyond

the leap of literary awareness

and books, far beyond

the rainbow colors and hues of paint

and tile and trees and flowers in spring

all for and of Palestine.

Rima shares, shares the beauty she finds,

shares the challenges and routes

whereby humans connect

over and over through the years.

Rima shares knowledge and facts

and empathy and compassion

and character

Rima is as exquisite

as the roses her sister tends.

Where music and art for Palestine might be

she is there, in body or spirit

she is there for and of Palestine.

March First for Al Awda

       March First for Al Awda

My heart is with all

who march March 1st ...

with all who value every home
& family.

All who value freedom of
(and from) religion.

All who crave and help create

fair and just laws...

All who write stories and poems, and paint,
all who build beauty & museums for Palestine.

All who vote for full and equal rights
and respect.

Every step marched yesterday
today and tomorrow for Al Awda

is amplified a thousand fold,
by all who can not be there.

And amplified again, and again
for Al Awda, amplified a trillion fold
by every refugee.

My heart is with all

who march for real justice

and a lasting peace.

Translating the Obvious ... A poem for peace by Anne Selden Annab

Translating the Obvious

"... a renewed commitment from everybody to work for peace that meets the aspirations of all, for Israelis, for Palestinians for all people of this region" John Kerry's call for a lasting Mideast peace

A
(singular- a united push
in and for peace)

RENEWED
(start now convinced peace
is decidedly better than war)

COMMITMENT FROM EVERYONE
(no matter who you are weigh in
for a just and lasting peace)

TO WORK
(resist distractions- focus,
put in all your best efforts)

FOR PEACE
(for a better future
for all our children)

THAT MEETS THE ASPIRATIONS OF ALL,
(freedom, freedom from fear & freedom
from want & freedom from bigotry &

freedom from one-state cynics and thieves
who thrive on the continuation of the conflict)

FOR ISRAELIS
(a fully secular Israel
fully respecting universal human rights
& the rule of fair and just laws)

FOR PALESTINIANS
(a fully secular Palestine
fully respecting universal human rights
& the rule of fair and just laws)

FOR ALL PEOPLE
(human beings- all equally part
of the human family,
and all equally responsible
for what is said, what is heard,
what will be... Invest all the goodness
and decency, all the honor and dignity,
all the compassion and hope and clarity
you can muster into conscientiously
ending the Israel-Palestine conflict)

FOR ALL PEOPLE
OF THIS REGION
(and beyond)

a poem Dedicated to Abu Yusuf

"A sea of Palestinians and their sympathizers lined Manhattan streets Saturday, marching to the United Nations and shouting that Israel's response to missile attacks was genocide that took children's lives. " Photo Credit: America's free press & NBC News

         Dedicated to Abu Yusuf

While some do serious work, crafting
reality based astute responses
to what is and might be,
there is also a world of people
being taught to ignore
 the full and total truth,
being taught to have tunnel vision,
being taught to reject diplomacy,
being taught to voluntarily disenfranchise
as if that will help bring peace and jobs, food
and water- and security to those in dire need.

A sea of people protest
with a storm of slogans
and symbols, all focused
on Palestinian suffering...

What of all the other children
the other families
the other flesh torn...

What of all the nameless
Arabs and Muslims
murdered by Islamists?

What of the communities ruined?

What of the girls enslaved?

What of the historic treasures,
and modern work places
decimated by Islamists
day after day after day...

What of tyrants and terror
and the ISIL evil - what of
the malicious Islamists
who consider anyone, everyone
who refuses to lionize Islamists
as infidels to be killed.

A sea of people protest "for Palestine"
many with very good intentions,
but few with good research skills
and the courage to question
what is heard...

A sea of people protest
worldwide with orchestrated
anti-Israel/anti-America ire
aimed to grow a crowd
aimed to escalate rage,
with anti-Israel scorn...
inadvertently informing
Islamist monsters
that their way wins

because a sea of people protest
wearing Palestinian flags
but not demanding Palestinian statehood
based on full respect for international law
to once and for ALL end
the injustice and violence
of Israel/Palestine unresolved.

A sea of people protest
oblivious to the rising tide
of Islamist crimes
and Islamist insults
to Islam.

"And it's up to all of us together."... a Spring poem for Palestine & peace

"And it's up to all of us together."
                 A Spring poem
                                  for Palestine & peace

Young bright things are coming-
stirring the ground, stretching,
reaching into the light and air
youth blossoming
everywhere
for Palestine

Young bright things
being gardens
of and for peace,
of and for decency, dignity and dialogue.

Young bright things
perfecting diplomacy
and Golden Rule thinking
in a modern age
where a whisper here
is heard there and echoed.

Young bright things
mentored by quiet heroes
and the kindness of strangers
through the years
finding the right words
to convey what is and shape
what will be...

Young bright things
infusing beauty with their being
character with their contributions
passion with their energy
imagination
and empathy
for Palestine
and peace.

 poem by Anne Selden Annab

"There are innumerable ways we can mobilize for peace.... The most important thing is that these ideas are just the beginning of what is possible. What's really needed is for each and every one of us that prefers a future of peace over conflict to contribute our own individual or collective initiatives to help that make happen. It's up to me. It's up to you. And it's up to all of us together." Tala Haikal

Free to Fund Palestine ... a Growing Gardens for Palestine poem by Anne Selden Annab

'I can see Palestine"

    Free to Fund Palestine

Zionism is not my business
and Israel
is not ours to take...
there are citizens there
not all are bigots
not all are cruel.

Zionism belongs to Israelis
whatever Zionism becomes is theirs
to translate or abandon,
to redeem or reject
argue for against about... obsess

Let me be free please
to fund Palestine
and peace...

Free and able to understand
& respect international law
universal human rights
diplomacy
dignity
grace...

Free from religious tyranny
of every type... free from harassment
free from hate campaigns

free from home demolitions
free from forced exile...

Free to influence negotiations
in positive pro-Palestine ways,

free to expect firm borders
where Zionism must stop.

Two sovereign
separate states:

Let refugees return or relocate
with dual citizenship a bridge
between narratives

let Palestine
be Palestine

let Israel
be Israel

and let every citizen
old and new
rise to the challenge

of building community
and a just and lasting
inclusive, fully secular
fully sovereign
fully real
two state peace.

To Rise to the Challenge

To Rise to the Challenge

Easy though it is
to idolize the unknown
and unknowable

Easy though it is
to get totally swept up
by clever hype and spin

Easy though it is
to follow a crowd rallied

I'd rather carefully choose
my own heroes...
preferring to pause to admire
men and women of words
and acts
that stand the test of time
& meritocracy...

Role models working hard
examining actual evidence
Listening learning thinkers
who make clear points
sharpening
my own thoughts

Story tellers who step away
from stereotypes...

Honest people
honorable people
real people
who rise to the challenge
of every day
being a little bit different
newly nuanced...

Golden Rule people
who practice what they preach

To be clear: Return... a poem by Anne Selden Annab

To be clear: Return

How many ways
can analysts & experts
(& echo chambers)
misinterpret- misconstrue-
misrepresent
and mangle
a refugee's inalienable
natural, legal, moral
and necessary
right to return...
and the right to live
free of religious tyranny
and institutionalized bigotry
wherever the individual
might chose to go

How many ways
can the idea of return be bullied
into a bellicose demand on both sides
with idiots itching to impoverish
and erase 'the other'

To be clear: Return
to original homes and lands
or resettle elsewhere.

It really is totally civilized
and right: Return
or relocate...

End the plight and impoverishment
of Palestinians... stop disenfranchising
yet another generation.

End the largest,
longest running refugee crisis
in the world today

Stop the Israel/Palestine conflict

To be clear: Return
or relocate, resettle elsewhere

People need passports
and job opportunities
People need peace
and security

People need the protection
of fair and just laws
and true equality
with the ability to earn respect
and a decent living
no matter what their name
no matter what their religion.

To be clear: Return
or resettle elsewhere
one by one in turn

Return and rebuild a new life
or relocate and rebuild a new life
a private life- a personal life
not as a pawn for war
but as a vital seed for peace
and progress... growing gardens
for Palestine...
A person with roots
and rights- and responsibilities:
One by one, family by family
Man and wife
Return to be Israeli
or relocate to be Palestinian
or move on and away: End the conflict
accept two states and many choices
of nationality.

To be clear: Return...
Return or relocate
to help build a Golden Rule Peace
worldwide where do unto others
as you would have them do unto you
is the guiding principle and goal
for our parents, for ourselves
for our neighbors
for civilization itself
and for all our children
no matter what their name.

A Spider Silk Cape... a series of three poems by Anne Selden Annab

To create the textiles, spiders are collected each morning and harnessed in specially conceived silking contraptions. Trained handlers extract the silk from 24 spiders at a time. The spiders are returned to the wild at the end of each day Photograph: David Levene for the Guardian

A Spider Silk Cape
If humankind
can conceive of
and make
a spider silk cape...

A million times
lithe Golden Orb spiders
living in the forest in the highlands
of Madagascar carefully-gently caught
for a day, harnessed to spin
their bright golden threads
then released alive
as evening falls...
year after year
eventually
a glorious golden
brocade embroidered.

If humankind can cherish art
and build museums for all to enjoy

If humankind
can sow and harvest wheat
make bread, grow grapes-
make wine

If humankind can remember goodness
and create jobs each with a living wage

If humankind can carefully, conscientiously craft
a Universal Declaration of Human Rights

If humankind can raise our children
to nurture their gifts and good relationships

If humankind can envision
and invest in environmentally friendly cities
with greenbelts and rooftop gardens

Surely we can also somehow shape
a just and lasting peace
in and for the Middle East

PART II
Two States: One Israel, One Palestine

Two states
One Israel, One Palestine
to be a modern marriage
making dreams come true:
Two individuals able to each
speak their own language
pursue their own dreams
build their own sanctuaries
and museums and news...

Two states
to be the Golden Rule
whereas do unto others
as you would have them do unto you
is the guiding principle
and cherished goal.

Two states to explore the compelling wisdom
of we, and the pivotal importance of us (and them)
working side by side each in our own sphere
to lovingly parent a future together... or weave a spider silk cape...
or repair a stairway... or build a car... or harvest an orchard...
empowering full and equal citizens and progress as civic rights
and responsibilities become more and more inclusive
and important.

Two states sovereign
each in their own realms
each in their own spheres

Two states to respect
the need for borders
the need for compromise
the need for language
the need for kindness
the need for compassion
the need for diplomacy
the need for honesty
the need for civilized conversations
the need for decent jobs
and the need for the rule of law
fair and just laws... the need for peace
and security
for every home and family.

Let the refugees return
to either be Israeli
or Palestinian
or Israeli-Palestinian or Palestinian-Israeli
or Palestinian-American...etc...
each in turn choosing
who they want to be
and where they want to build a life
for life moves on continuously changing
and our parents' choices
can make all the difference.

PART III
A Golden Rule Peace

In an interconnected
global world
we are the spider silk cape
we are the golden glow
of good intentions
and careful craftsmanship
appreciated...

Art and history and math and science
in dialog- to be synergy
and dedication
as glorious dreams are caught
and recreated
for today's world
with today's tools
sharing bits of light
and shadow
to reveal
the best that we can find
in our own memories
fingering a fabric
and recalling a mood

The forest is in the weave
and the airlines it took
to transport, the sunrises and rainbows
and oceans and streets, the accents
and languages and all
and all earth's beauty caught
strand by strand
woven
and embroidered
to entrance
an audience
willing to believe.

Our parents' choices
(and our own)
can make all the difference.

The Gallery... a Growing Gardens for Palestine poem by Anne Selden Annab

The Gallery

I dreamed
of him again...
We
were at the end,
in a gallery of treasures.

Along every wall were podiums
of all different heights holding
great silver urns and bowls
of all different sizes and shapes
smooth surfaces polished
reflecting ornate details
rims and handles
and flourishes

And he turned to me
spoke gently

And we walked together
slowly through the gallery...

Speaking of what we knew-
what we value
treasure

as we made our way
towards the farthest wall
with wide open doors

revealing the hint
of an exquisite garden beyond.

Ask a Name... a poem by Anne Selden Annab

The light comes in
with rules
about rainbows

We follow with myths
and memories...

gleaning goodness

A story retold becomes
as real as The Arc...
as firm as the floorboards
under my feet

and as big as the sky-
when I step outside...

Every fairy tale
a confirmation
a promise kept
to captivate
for generations

Ask a name
and then spin spin spin
turn straw into gold

Darwish & Dickinson

Mahmoud Darwish
& Emily Dickinson
side by side
on my shelves
Alphabetically
aesthetically matched
loner by loner
into a happily ever after
of commingling

Poet to poet
meeting in me

in turn in time
book by book
and page by page

libraries build character
